Zeeland mussels from the barbecue

For a long time we were led to believe that you could only eat mussels when the R is in the month, not from May through August. Let that happen to be exactly barbecue season. With the prompt result that one of the greatest delicacies in Belgium and the Netherlands is rarely seen on a grill grate. That’s an eternal shame, because the R thing doesn’t make sense. That baking story dates back to the days when refrigerated transport was not yet possible, and transport by road (horse and wagon) or water (horse-drawn barge) in the hot summer months ended in a stinky mess. Nowadays, fresh Zeeland mussels are not available only from mid-April to mid-June due to spawning time. So they are plentiful when we bring out the barbecue en masse. Thank goodness, because barbecue mussels are delicious, easy and quick to prepare and therefore an ideal appetizer before or between meals.
