American-style Hot Dogs & Bratwursts
There is nothing wrong with the taste of a good bratwurst and it is a perfect piece of meat to prepare on the barbecue. Yet sausages often end up on the plate like a disaster plan: burnt on the outside and still raw on the inside or, also no exception, cracked open. Moreover, they are often served soulfully with only a sauce. This is not good. All you eat then is a fatty snack. A bratwurst should be nicely browned, whole and cooked, served (on a bun) with a lot of decorations and sauces, making it a feast to eat. If you go to watch an American baseball game, you cannot escape hot dog stands and food trucks serving non-stop lines of customers. Hot dogs and sausages stand up to baseball in America as snert and zopie stand up to skating in the Netherlands. You are given your main ingredients (the sausage in a bun) and then you go and dress it up as you choose. First with to your own taste with all kinds of sauces (mustard, tomato ketchup, pepper sauce, barbecue sauce and mayonnaise), things like onions, tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, sauerkraut, pickles, peppers, pickled sour (relish), bacon bits and grated cheese, finally topping it all off with celery salt and/or pepper. That's how you get sausage that everyone likes, or, as my mother would have said, "that's how you make even shit taste good."
